Felipe Melo’s karate-kick challenge on Lazio captain Lucas Biglia has earned the Inter man a three-game ban.

The Brazilian midfielder was shown a red card for kicking Biglia in the shoulder during the Nerazzurri’s defeat on Sunday, and will now sit out the next three games.

In its disciplinary ruling, the Lega Serie A found that Melo had “deliberately struck an opponent with a kick to the shoulder”, slapping him with a three-game ban for “violent conduct”.

Roma striker Edin Dzeko has received a two-game suspension after a straight red card for dissent. The Lega found he had directed an “insulting expression” at referee Andrea Gervasoni.

Napoli midfielder Jorginho, Segej Milinkovic-Savic of Lazio, Udinese’s Molla Wague and Atalanta centre-back Gabriel Paletta all received a one-match ban for their respective red cards.

Roma pair Miralem Pjanic and Radja Nainggolan, Biglia, Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli, Verona’s Jacopo Sala, Giancarlo Gonzalez of Palermo, Danilo Soddimo of Frosinone and Sassuolo’s Simone Missiroli will also miss one game after picking up a fifth yellow card of the season.

Off the pitch, Atalanta have been fined €15,000 for “chants expressive of discrimination relating to territorial origin” from their fans during the defeat to Napoli.
