With it initially diagnosed that he had sprained the joint, speculation yesterday evening was that ligament damage was also feared.

The player is understood to have undergone further tests on Monday morning at the Gemelli health clinic in Rome and an announcement is anticipated shortly.

Ahead of that, though, Dutch outlet Voetbal International are leading speculation that the 24-year-old’s MRI has shown torn ligaments, a broken meniscus and a damaged medial ligament on the inside of the joint.

It is reported that such an injury will hand Strootman a nine-month recovery period, to end his season for Roma and his hopes of representing the Netherlands at this summer’s World Cup.

Whether or not the midfielder undergoes surgery, report Voetbal International, remains unclear at this moment.
