Former Roma goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg admits he has failed on two fronts this season.

The Dutchman left the Giallorossi to join English side Fulham last summer, but since then the London club have been relegated from the Premier League and Stekelenburg himself has failed to make Holland’s World Cup squad.
In an interview with Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, the 31-year-old lamented what he describes as a dip in form from the level he was playing at in 2010.
“I think that before anything else it’s necessary to accept your responsibilities,” Stekelenburg said. “If I had played at the same levels as I did in 2010, the Coach would have had no reason to ignore me.
“I went to Fulham to play in the Premier League and earn myself a World Cup place, but I failed on both fronts.
“After I left Ajax, I went to Roma. I had to adjust but the first season was positive. Then, in the second season a new Coach arrived and there were some problems.”
The shot-stopper also hinted he sees his future away from Fulham.
“At Fulham I have had three Coaches. I’m 31-years-old, I feel good and I want to get back playing. I will come back here [Fulham] because I have a three-year contract, then we’ll see.
“My agent is working hard to find a good solution for everyone. I can’t wait to get back to how it was in 2010, but with more experience.”
