Inter’s Jonathan says he considers himself 100 per cent Brazilian but would still consider playing for Italy in future.

The 28-year-old is eligible for the Azzurri and was linked with potential inclusion in Cesare Prandelli’s provisional 30-man World Cup squad.

However, in an interview with Terra, the defender admitted his omission was probably for the best as it keeps his dream of one day representing his homeland alive.

“It’s true, I could have been called up by Italy but in the end it didn’t happen and I’m fine with that,” Jonathan said. “Now I will have a chance with Brazil after the World Cup.

“Maybe Prandelli understood that. I am Brazilian and I want to play in a World Cup with Brazil.

“But I am a footballer and I would still take the Azzurri chance if it meant playing in an international tournament.

“What did Prandelli say? That he didn’t think I was convinced, but that he would think about it in case.

“I’m not Italian, I’m 100 per cent Brazilian, although I am happy in Milan.”
