Wojciech Szczesny confirms Luciano Spalletti is “harder with the players” than his Roma predecessor Rudi Garcia.

Wojciech Szczesny confirms Luciano Spalletti is “harder with the players” than his Roma predecessor Rudi Garcia.

The Polish goalkeeper has spent two seasons on loan with the Giallorossi, and saw Garcia sacked in January last year.

“I have great memories of Rudi, because he gave me the opportunity to come here and he believed in me,” Szczesny told Roma TV.

“Then he left in January, but I think he’s a great Coach and a great person. I think that when a Coach leaves the whole team must take a bit of the blame, not just the Coach.

“Spalletti? He came here and he immediately brought discipline to the team. Rudi was more of a friend, a father figure; Spalletti is harder with the players.

“He demands discipline, and everything must be done the way he wants it. He came in at a difficult time where we weren’t winning games and he radically changed things. I think he’s a very good Coach.”

The interview consisted of Szczesny being shown a series of photos, and he was shown one of Gonzalo Higuain’s winning goal for Juventus in Week 17…

“Next please, I don’t like this one!

“It was similar to the match against Real [Madrid], we played good football in a difficult stadium, we dominated the possession but came back with no points.

“This is the problem, because we’re a good team but we always have to go to these stadiums and look for a result.

“It still hurts, but I’ll admit that Higuain scored a great goal. That’s why he cost €90m, he’s probably one of the best strikers in the world and he can decide important games.

“Radja [Nainggolan] played well in that game, but for Edin [Dzeko] it was more difficult because there wasn’t a lot of space up top.

“We have to look ahead though, there’s no point dwelling on what happened. It was a good year, we took the most points after Juventus, beating tough teams like Napoli, Inter, Milan and Lazio.

“We can look to the future with confidence because I think this team has a great future, this year has shown that there’s a good base to build on and I think next year will be even better.”
