Luciano Spalletti describes Juan Jesus as “a top quality player” as the Inter man is on the verge of joining Roma.

It was reported earlier today that the Giallorossi have agreed a deal with the Brazilian defender, and he could officially join for pre-season tomorrow.

“He’s a top quality player,” Spalletti insisted in a Press conference today.

“Also in consideration of what the club can afford for now. We want top quality players, we’re looking to bring in the best players possible.

“We need a minimum of two defenders, we need versatile players. A left-footed player can play on the right, but it’s more difficult the other way. [Antonio] Rüdiger made us comfortable last year with his versatility.

“We need a different player from [Alessandro] Florenzi in that role, so those are the players we’re looking at.”

Miralem Pjanic was presented as a Juventus player today, and said he understood why it was hard for his former team to finish above the Bianconeri in recent years.

“Mire called me in the evening before he left to go to Turin. The things we said will stay between us.

“If he says it’s better there’s no way of me knowing that, I’ve only worked with Roma among the big teams. When people ask me if a player is good or not, I find it hard to say if I’ve never coached them.

“If he said that, he’ll have his reasons. Juventus have done well to bring in a quality player in terms of technique and choices.

“He anticipates what to do a metre or half a metre before touching it, it makes it hard to predict what he’s thinking. It’s an important quality which [David] Pizarro had.

“We’ll have to find a solution.

“Our goal is to fight on a par with Juventus, Napoli, Milan, Inter, Sassuolo, Lazio and Fiorentina.

“It’s clear that if you’re playing poker, and one opponent at the table has won the last tournament and holds a lot of chips, they have the ability to manage their strategy – so what do you do?

“They’ve done well in recent years, but we have to find a solution to meet this challenge. We have a great opponent in front of us.

“How do we bridge the gap? The quality of our play is something that could go in our favour, as well as other things.

“Maybe the quality of play is worth two points, maybe it’ll give you a little more. Juventus can do what they like.

“We have to face the opponents I mentioned a moment ago in the right way, we have to try to win against Juventus.

“There are no excuses we have to do our best. Then of course there are other opponents at our poker table.”
