Inter Coach Luciano Spalletti expects Mauro Icardi to stay but 'if someone pays and he wants to go, what I think becomes redundant'.

The Nerazzurri captain has a €110m release clause, though it’s only valid for the first two weeks of July.

Therefore the Beneamata won’t have to sell him to meet their Financial Fair Play targets, as the books have to be balanced by June 30.

“I’m a Coach who speaks to the sporting director Piero Ausilio every week,” Spalletti explained at a football debate in Perugia last night.

“I’m a Coach who speaks to the sporting director Piero Ausilio every week,” Spalletti explained at a football debate in Perugia last night.

“He tells me how things have gone, then there are some things which are done that don’t depend on us.

“When we left we were planning for a probable future where Mauro is in the number 9 shirt.

“Next season he’ll score many more goals than last season, so finding another player to do what he’s done wouldn’t be easy.

“But if someone comes, pays what they have to pay, and the player wants to go, what I think becomes redundant.”

Spalletti also reflected on the season which has just finished, as well as considering whether his side could challenge for the Scudetto.

“The lads showed a maturity which surprised me, I got a lot from them and learned a lot. I brought an idea and they followed me, they answered me in a positive way even during that long difficult period.

“They were always steady, never giving an inch.

“The Scudetto? It’s an impulse that the Press has to make it like a trampoline, we’re on an upward path but we have to be practical.

“We’re still several steps behind the top teams, Juventus and Napoli. We’ve narrowed the gap to Roma a bit, but those are two very strong teams.

“And Roma showed it in the Champions League: you can get to a certain point in Europe with mentality, but when you get to a certain point you need strong players.

“Roma showed they have a strong squad and Coach.”
