Yann Sommer has withdrawn from the Switzerland squad and returned to Inter after seemingly suffering an ankle injury.

The 35-year-old Swiss shot stopper was forced off the pitch in the 37th minute of the friendly with Denmark on Saturday evening, having suffered an issue with his right ankle. He was replaced by Yvon Mvogo and looked pained as he limped off the pitch.

Sommer has been a crucial figure in Simone Inzaghi’s Inter squad this season and his issue immediately caused concern in the Lombardy capital, which has been engulfed in the recent Francesco Acerbi racism row.

As announced by the Swiss FA, Sommer has withdrawn from the national team and returned to Inter, where he’ll undergo a round of medical tests. He has been replaced by Jonas Omlin in the squad.

The Nerazzurri are already dealing with injuries to Juan Cuadrado, Marko Arnautovic and Stefan de Vrij, and will be hoping that the Swiss shot stopper manages to avoid any serious injuries.

Sommer stats

This season, the 35-year-old goalkeeper has kept 23 clean sheets and conceded 18 goals in 3360 minutes of action across 37 total appearances.
