Jose Mourinho may not be able to rely on Chris Smalling for Roma’s upcoming Serie A match with Empoli.

It’s not been an easy start to the new season for the Giallorossi, who have only picked up one point from their first three outings. Mourinho’s side drew Salernitana before suffering losses to Hellas Verona and Milan.

The poor start leaves Roma in 18th place in the Serie A table, piling on the pressure as they work to fight for a top four finish and Champions League qualification this season.

As noted by Gianluca Di Marzio, Smalling has not been training with his Roma teammates in Trigoria and is now at risk of missing out on the match against Empoli on Sunday evening.

Mourinho will wait for the final training session ahead of the match before making a decision, but the 33-year-old could be forced out of action, adding to the club’s injury concerns.

Last season, Smalling saw 4005 minutes of action across 47 total appearances for Roma, being one of the most important figures in the squad.
