Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini was sent off for dissent after Ruslan Malinovskyi’s goal was controversially disallowed against Fiorentina.

It would’ve been the equaliser at the Stadio Franchi, a through ball from midfield went past Hans Hateboer and straight through to Malinovskyi to score.

The linesman flagged offside and it was confirmed by VAR, but there was an error in the protocol, because Hateboer did not touch the ball.

If that was the case, then Hateboer’s offside was merely interfering with play, a decision that had to be made by the referee himself.

The VAR should’ve asked the official to view it on the pitch-side monitor, as this was a subjective call, and VAR can only decide on objective matters.

It is also arguable that Hateboer might not have been interfering with play, as the through ball went past him and his marker.

The situation infuriated Gasperini, who was sent off from the touchline for dissent.

As pundit Giovanni Capuano put it: “This call sets a precedent. It is the death of passive offside.”

  1. The referee team called it off for offside so why would they need to go watch it on the monitor? If the goal had stood, but VAR called it off i could see why he would need to go see it.
