Former Milan star Andriy Shevchenko and his family joined an anti-war protest in London, while Spezia have two players with Ukrainian blood in their squad against Roma.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has shaken the world of sport and Italian football has a long previous and current history with the country.

Shevchenko spent much of his career playing for Milan and until recently was the coach of Genoa in Serie A too.

He attended an anti-war protest in London this afternoon, posting pictures of the event on social media.

Meanwhile, Spezia warmed up for their Serie A match against Roma wearing special shirts with ‘Stop War’ in the colours of the Ukrainian flag.

Spezia have Ukraine international Viktor Kovalenko in the squad and he was on the bench this evening, while goalkeeper Ivan Provedel’s mother is from Ukraine.

There are hopes Roberto De Zerbi, Davide Possanzini and the other Italian members of the Shakhtar Donetsk coaching staff will be able to leave Ukraine by dawn, as they were placed on a train out of Kyiv this evening and are on their way towards the border.
