The current Coach of Ukraine remains a Rossoneri legend thanks to two spells at San Siro, scoring 175 goals in 322 competitive games.

“The club needs to get back into the Champions League, because that is where Milan belong,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“It looks to me as if the club is certainly trying hard. This Milan is a long-term project and needs to be built up calmly to get back to the top first in Italy, then in Europe. It takes time and patience.”

Meanwhile, Gattuso targets his first silverware with the Italian Super Cup against Juventus on January 16 in Jeddah.

“Juventus are the strongest side in Serie A and it’s almost impossible for one of the other clubs to trouble them. Beating Juve to the title is difficult, but it is simpler in a one-off match. If Milan prepare well and focus on the details, they can do it.

“There is a lot of pressure on Higuain and he has been unlucky. For example, the penalty against Juve is one of those incidents that can change everything.

“Since the start of the season, Higuain has been treated as the star signing and everyone was watching his every move, especially that night against his old club. He’s a great player and is gambling with his future, because if Milan qualify for the Champions League, he can stay at the club and prove he cares.

“He just needs to stay calm during difficult moments, as does everyone at Milan. Tough times happen in football, but they always pass by.”

There had been reports just before the winter break that Gattuso would be sacked if he didn’t beat SPAL.

“Rino is absolutely the right person for the job,” insisted former teammate Sheva.

“I like this attitude that the club has, people with clear ideas who are not shaken by difficult moments. Leonardo and Paolo Maldini are working with calm and competence, as they know this club better than anyone.

“Plus we have to consider Milan are doing well in tough circumstances with the transfer limitations and Financial Fair Play. I hope Milan can continue to work towards their rebirth.

“It is important to keep supporting Rino, because he is giving the team an identity and a sense of belonging. He is the right man for this Milan. I am happy that the club is keeping faith with him.”
