Serie A is increasingly northern-centric, with 15 out of 20 clubs for the 2018-19 season based above Rome, while Emilia-Romagna have four sides.

The make-up of the 20-team division was confirmed with last night’s Serie B promotion play-off final, as Frosinone got the better of Palermo, 3-2 on aggregate.

They join Empoli and Parma, who were promoted automatically as first and second in the Serie B campaign.

This means 15 out of the 20 top flight clubs are based from Tuscany upwards, as Rome and below are considered the south.

Lombardy has three – Inter, Milan and Atalanta – while Piedmont and specifically Turin have Juventus and Torino.

The only club from the south (if one considers Rome as central Italy) is Napoli, while Cagliari are based on the island of Sardinia.
