Bologna had the best chances with Lewis Ferguson hitting the woodwork and Musa Barrow going close, but this stalemate means Lazio don’t climb into second place and could be overtaken by Roma and Milan this weekend.
These teams were both in good general form, but also fresh from surprise defeats, Bologna to Torino and Lazio in the Conference League to AZ Alkmaar. Riccardo Orsolini, Nico Dominguez and Ciro Immobile were out injured, with Adam Marusic suspended.
Sinisa Mihajlovic was remembered throughout the crowd, having been most closely associated with these clubs in his career.
Musa Barrow fired over the bar several times from promising positions and Pedro slipped at the crucial moment to turn wide on a Luis Alberto assist, but Lukasz Skorupski ran a huge risk with his sliding tackle as Felipe Anderson pounced on a back-pass.
Bologna thought they had taken the lead on 29 minutes when Lewis Ferguson met a floated Giorgos Kyriakopoulos cross at the back post, but the free header thumped the upright.
Barrow forced a great Ivan Provedel save at the base of the near post from 10 yards on the Nikola Moro assist, but moments later Skorupski stood his ground for a desperate double save on Luis Alberto and Felipe Anderson.
Stefan Posch was allowed a totally free header on a corner that he turned wide and Matias Vecino’s yellow card means he will be suspended for the Derby della Capitale against Roma.
After the restart, Kyriakopoulos fired an angled drive across the face of goal to shave a coat of paint off the far post.
Barrow was crucial defending, throwing himself in the path of a Vecino scorcher that was not dissimilar to the goal he scored last week against Napoli.
The Gambian also threatened at the other end, a powerful curler from distance skimming the far top corner.
There was a comical moment in the final minutes, as referee Fabio Maresca rushed over to stop Felipe Anderson’s argument with Gary Medel and slipped, accidentally crashing into them.
