The average Serie A attendance has risen by more than 6 percent at the midway point of the season, compared to the end of the previous campaign.

The Italian Football Observatory reports the average attendance for the first 17 rounds of the 2019-20 season in Serie A was 27,108 spectators.

This is an increase of 6.4% in relation to the figures released at the end of 18-19, which yielded an average attendance of 25,481 fans.

This represents the best percentage jump in the last five years and a massive 21.9% leap from the end of 15-16, which had an average attendance of just 22,234.

Serie A attendances had been in decline for years, with an average of 31,161 in 1997-98 dropping to 22,604 by 2012.

However, there has been a recent upswing in spectators going to Italian stadia, with the average attendance rising year-on-year since 16-17.

Inter lead the way this season with an average attendance of 63,697 fans per game.

City neighbours Milan sit in second place with an average of 53,917, while Juventus rank third with 39,740.
