Sassuolo are the latest Serie A club to officially withdraw their support for FIGC candidate Carlo Tavecchio.

“The Mapei group, owners of US Sassuolo Calcio, stay true to their values in the world of sport and thus maintain Carlo Tavecchio’s candidacy is no longer sustainable.”

That statement released on the official club website this afternoon takes another vote away from the 71-year-old.

Tavecchio is facing growing calls to step down from the race for President of the Federation, but reiterated he has no intention of backing away.

So far Sassuolo, Fiorentina, Sampdoria and Cesena have removed their backing, while Juventus and Roma were always in favour of alternative candidate Demetrio Albertini.

Tavecchio made racist comments during his presentation speech as a candidate, prompting FIFA and the EU to call for an investigation.

If more join in revoking their support for Tavecchio, the Lega Serie A will no longer be able to put him forward as their unified candidate.

He still has the support of Lega Serie B, Lega Pro and LND.

The Players’ Association and Coaches’ Association both back Albertini.
