Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri insists Coppa Italia is ‘an unsporting tournament’ ahead of tomorrow’s clash against Milan.

The Biancocelesti will visit the Rossoneri at San Siro in the quarter-finals tomorrow, but Sarri is not impressed with the tournament’s format.

“Milan won a derby that boosted their motivation, but we also won an important game,” Sarri told Lazio Style TV.

“Coppa Italia is one of the most unsporting tournaments in the world, it’s been clearly shaped to let certain teams reach the final stages and get tv revenues. Nobody knows when the draw takes place and who is in charge of it. We know it’s like this and we’ll play the game to the best of our chances.”

The Tuscan coach is not a fan of Coppa Italia and made exactly the same claims when he was in charge of Empoli and Juventus in the past.

Talking about tomorrow’s match, Sarri refused to go into details about Lazio’s potential line-up.

“I have no idea,” he admitted.

“We should not be affected by the league match we badly lost [in September]. We must have motivation. We are in the nowhere land, so the Coppa Italia is an important target for us, while it could be a secondary objective for Milan given that they are in the race for the Scudetto.”

3 thought on “Sarri insists Coppa Italia is ‘an unsporting tournament’ ahead of Milan vs. Lazio”
  1. For Lazio Coppa has always been important, cause it’s the only way to win trophies. Unlike roma who hasn’t won anything in a long Time.

  2. Lazio struggled in the second tier of European competition and are off the pace in Italy. Would he really rather be playing against teams in Serie D as early as August? Surely that would just add to the schedule congestion, stress & injuries.

  3. As if the Euros or the World Cup have not been organized to favor preferred teams to reach the final such as happened and admitted to by corrupt Platini pertaining to predetermined group and bracket manipulation to ensure France could only face Brazil in the final.
