Vincenzo Montella insists Sampdoria want a result against Juventus “for our pride” and drops hints over his future.

On the face of it, tomorrow’s match is a dead-rubber, as the Bianconeri have already won the Scudetto while the visitors are safe from relegation.

“We need a good result for ourselves, for our pride and for our professionalism,” Montella said in his pre-match Press conference.

“It’s our last game, and it comes after our defeat [against Genoa] in the last game. Although we’re facing an invincible team, we want to finish our campaign well.”

Following the defeat in the Derby della Lanterna, it has been reported that Montella is at odds with the Samp hierarchy, and could leave in the summer.

“It’s been a long, difficult week because of the result on the pitch and some errors in the post-match.

“It’s an even more complicated situation than it was before, but we have to look forward and try to analyse the mistakes we made.

“That’s what we did, and we’ve clarified certain aspects. It’s true that mistakes were made.

“I’ve heard that I can’t get along with [Carlo] Osti and with other directors. I’ll say that there’s great respect for the professional and the person.

“It’s not true that we’re incompatible. I’m the Coach, I’ll make technical evaluations and leave it at that.

“I’ll meet with the President [Massimo Ferrero] and see whether our ambitions and considerations match. I think the Coach has to speak to an inexperienced board and footballing environment.

“So I’ll stay at my post and if, at the appropriate time, I’m asked for my opinion then I have a duty to give it.

“We’re thinking of the next game, and then I’ll meet the President. Everything is open, we’ve arranged to meet in the next week and get a more complete picture.

“We’ll definitely be very direct and very up-front.”

Sampdoria have struggled this season, is the team better than their results suggest?

“We won 40 points, we weren’t handed them,” Montella replied.

“It’s a few less than expected. I believe that the players, in terms of the concept of the squad haven’t been well integrated.

“They are all players who are worth more than 40 points, but in a different context and integrated differently.

“Would I have preferred to have the whole season? Of course, but a Coach has to be good when he takes over [mid-season] as well.

“I think I took over twice this season, because the squad was changed in January. [Vasco] Regini left and Dodo came in. The same goes for [Ervin] Zukanovic [who went to Roma] and Andrea Ranocchia [who came in from Inter].

“[Jacopo] Sala came in and got injured, the same as [Carlos] Carbonero. As well as amalgamating the players we had to grow them, and we paid for the first part.

“In an already difficult situation it weighed heavily on us.”
