Every season La Gazzetta dello Sport releases a list containing all of the top flight salaries, and this term the total wage bill for the league is €1.1bn.

Unsurprisingly, Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo is the highest paid player in the division, with his €31m net salary more than three times that of Gonzalo Higuain, who is in second place with €9.5m.

Unsurprisingly, Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo is the highest paid player in the division, with his €31m net salary more than three times that of Gonzalo Higuain, who is in second place with €9.5m.

Paulo Dybala is third with his salary of €7m per season, and six of the top 10 players in terms of salary play for Juve, with Miralem Pjanic, Douglas Costa, Emre Can and Leo Bonucci also making the cut.

Inter captain Mauro Icardi just makes it into the top 10 with his €4.5m per season salary, and Lorenzo Insigne is the only Napoli player in the top 10.

Indeed, the Partenopei continue to punch above their weight financially, as only Insigne, Dries Mertens, Marek Hamsik, Kalidou Koulibaly and Jose Callejon in their squad earn more than Milan’s Fabio Borini.

Despite finishing second last year, Napoli’s salary budget is only the fifth highest in Serie A, less than half that of Juventus and also less than Milan, Inter and Roma.

The Rossoneri have the second highest budget in the division, with their €140m per season close to €30m more than city rivals Inter.

Even more impressive than Napoli is Atalanta, who are 14th in terms of salary but have finished fourth and seventh in the last two seasons, as well as reaching the Last 32 of the Europa League last year.

Empoli have the lowest in the division at €16m per year, a figure which would pay Cristiano Ronaldo’s salary for around half a year.
