Italy have put themselves forward, but only with the Stadio Olimpico in Rome and not also the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Milan.

Roma is going forward with its candidacy, while Milan is no longer on the table,” explained CONI President Giovanni Malagò.

“The Olimpico is the only arena with the requisite characteristics demanded by UEFA for these international competitions.

“We will wait until September 19 to see if Rome is chosen for this curious edition of the tournament. If the Olimpico gets the all-clear, we would need some technological work on the stadium due to security issues.”

The stadium has also been used for Italy’s Six Nations rugby matches.

There are also reports San Siro could be at risk as the host venue for the 2016 Champions League Final.
