The Rossoneri missed out of qualification for Europe’s top competition by finishing in fifth, just one point behind city rivals Inter.

“We’re sorry that we dropped so many points on the road,” said Romagnoli.

“We heard that Empoli had two great chances to equalise late in the game last night, but that’s football for you. We did our part and won, but it wasn’t enough and for that I’m sorry.

“Unfortunately, during the season, we threw away too many points in games where we were winning. If I could choose, I would replay the derby or the away game with Parma.”

A run of just one win in seven matches during March and April is what cost the Milanese club their Champions League hopes. During that period, they lost the Derby della Madonnina, then lost away to Sampdoria, Juventus, and Torino, with a draw at Parma sandwiched in between those defeats.
