Roma will try to negotiate a new contract for Kostas Manolas before the €36m release clause comes into effect on July 1, forcing Manchester United to pay more.
There have been multiple reports in Italy and England over the weekend that Manchester United are prepared to pay the full €36m fee.
However, it’s worth noting this is not active until July 1, so any attempt to prise the Greek international away in January would require talks directly with Roma.

In the meantime, the Giallorossi are continuing negotiations for a new and improved contract that would either raise or eliminate the release clause.
His current deal worth €3m per year was signed in December 2017 and runs to June 2022.
Roma’s plan is to bump up the salary to €5m per year and above all change the release clause.
It is also worth noting that Manchester United aren’t the only club who would pay €36m to purchase Manolas, as he is also targeted by Juventus, Inter and Arsenal.
The problem for the Giallorossi is that Manolas recently switched agents and is now represented by Mino Raiola, who also negotiated huge deals for Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Gianluigi Donnarumma.
