The former Barcelona midfielder is out of contract this summer after a brief spell back in Spain with Valencia and had been strongly reported this week as having reached agreement with the Giallorossi.

However, with the likes of Liverpool also linked to the 34-year-old and sporting director Walter Sabatini reportedly holding reservations on his prospective involvement in next winter’s Africa Cup of Nations, it was not seen as a formality.

But, the player has today been pictured by Italian media as in the capital, touching down at Fiumicino Airport in the early hours of the afternoon.

The player is now expected to head out to Roma’s training facilities at Trigoria to complete formalities and sign off on a contract with last season’s second place outfit.
