Monza talent Filippo Ranocchia opened up about the recent attack on Pablo Mari and others in a supermarket in Milan

The Arsenal loanee was doing his shopping when he suddenly felt a cold and sharp pain in his back. He had been stabbed by 46-year-old Andrea Tombolini, who also attacked four others, sadly killing 47-year-old cashier Luis Fernando Ruggieri. Pablo Mari has undergone surgery and will be sidelined for around two months.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Ranocchia first revealed how the Monza squad felt when they received the news of Pablo Mari’s stabbing.

“We couldn’t believe it, it seemed absurd that one of our teammates had been stabbed while shopping with his family. It was shocking news for everyone.

“When we heard that his life was not in danger it was a huge relief, we wanted to go and see him right away, but the team told us it was better to wait.”

He touched on when he heard from the 29-year-old Spaniard.

“After the operation. We knew he had to sleep, but we sent him messages in the team chat. When he woke up and wrote to us that the worst was over and that he couldn’t wait to come back, it was beautiful.”

Finally, Ranocchia discussed the emotions ahead of tomorrow’s clash against Bologna. Monza requested that the match be postponed but this was rejected by Lega Serie A.

“Against Bologna we will play for Pablo but also for Luis Fernando Ruggieri who lost his life in this crazy attack. Our thoughts go out to him who did not make it, to his loved ones and to all the people involved in that night of terror.”

The 21-year-old Ranocchia joined Monza on loan from Juventus in the summer, looking for regular playing time as he continues his development. He’s scored one goal in four appearances for the club, starting to show his qualities on the pitch.
