The world of calcio is divided after the Giallorossi captain went public with his concerns about how the club is treating him, but the former Italy CT is backing his fellow tactician after his decision to drop the legendary forward.

“It’s hard to judge the way this Totti case has exploded at Roma in recent days without being deeply familiar with the situation from the inside,” Prandelli wrote in his weekly column for Calciomercato.

“What’s come out is a situation and a relationship between Francesco and Luciano that’s unclear.

“I don’t know how it’s come to this with a symbol of Rome and Roma, but above all a good lad.

“I can’t understand Totti’s position, but I understand the Coach’s decision perfectly: you can be the most important player, the captain, but certain behaviour isn’t acceptable.

“Even more serious is the role of the club, they’ve shown incredible inaction in addressing the issue.

“Some topics have to be very clearly addressed at the right time and not put-off.”

Prandelli is a former Fiorentina Coach, and warns that the Viola have been prematurely ruled-out of the Scudetto race.

“They’ve done well to consolidate third place despite the pressure Roma and Inter’s results have put on.

“Against the Nerazzurri and Atalanta we saw a squad on the ball and the direct clashes Napoli and Fiorentina are facing [Napoli play Milan tonight, then Fiorentina next Monday, the Viola have Napoli then Roma] will tell us a lot about [Paulo] Sousa’s lads.

“Two positive results wouldn’t only send a strong message about third place, but could even throw the Viola back into the Scudetto race.

“After all, there are only six points separating Fiorentina and Juventus.”
