The international break that closed last Tuesday saw Italy Coach Antonio Conte calling up a slew of new players, including the likes of Mirko Valdifiori and oriundo Eder, while previously capped Poli stayed home.

The Rossoneri playmaker was asked by La Gazzetta dello Sport whether he had any regrets, but he answered negatively.

“I have no regrets, but I do have hopes of returning to the Azzurri group," he said. "Unfortunately at the last break I wasn't in my top condition.

“I had the opportunity of training with Conte in the past. You can tell right away that he's driven to win and that he's a fantastic Coach. Tactically speaking, he's monstrous.

“I hope to be with the Azzurri on June 12 [when Croatia-Italy is played]. But my primary objective is doing well with Milan so I can convince Conte to call me again. We must end the season properly for ourselves, for the supporters and for these legendary colours.”

The 25-year-old was also asked whether he missed the Champions League.

“You bet! That's where Milan's real DNA emerges. In the last edition, against Ajax, we went down to 10 men after 20 minutes, but we still made it through the group stage. In the Champions League, you always see a different Milan.”

Finally, Poli was asked for a word about their rivals Juventus.

“They have four [consecutive] Scudetti now, and they earned them. Their hunger for victory always brings them to the top.

“It's something you can learn, but you also need to have it inside you. For my own part, I never give up, on the pitch and outside of it. That's my personality and sometimes I overdo it.”
