Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba reacted to his absence from the France 2022 World Cup squad. ‘God had another plan for me.’

The former Manchester United star had delayed surgery on a knee injury sustained in pre-season training so that he would have a better chance of being fit in time for the tournament in Qatar.

However, when he did eventually have the operation on the meniscus, he then suffered a muscular problem during the final stages of his attempts at a return to full fitness.

He is yet to appear for Juventus this season, so was not called up by Didier Deschamps for the France squad.

“God had another plan for me,” wrote Pogba on social media.

“I will be supporting my team, my nation, my country from far away, but my heart is with them! Best of luck to all the selected players.”

He accompanied the message with a picture of himself cradling and kissing the World Cup trophy that he won with France in 2018.

Pogba has not played a competitive match since lasting just 10 minutes in Manchester United’s 4-0 Premier League defeat to Liverpool on April 19.

He has 91 senior caps for France, in which he scored 11 goals and provided nine assists.
