Stefano Pioli is confident Rafael Leao is ‘in good shape and very motivated’ against Inter, but the Milan coach knows he will be ‘either the happiest coach in the world or the most disappointed’ tonight.

It kicks off at San Siro at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

The Rossoneri have a mountain to climb after losing the first leg 2-0, even without the away goals rule, and have lost their last three meetings with Inter in Serie A, the Supercoppa Italiana and Champions League.

“We are eager to put in a performance up to our capabilities and we are all ready,” Pioli told Sky Sport Italia.

Rafael Leao was out injured last week, but returns to the starting XI, although it remains to be seen how long the thigh muscle will hold out for.

Other changes see Malick Thiaw and Junior Messias preferred to Simon Kjaer and Alexis Saelemaekers.

“Leao is in good shape, very motivated. Bennacer is also missing, so we are playing with a more attacking midfielder. We know what we want to do, which is to be aggressive, solid and score a few goals.

“It makes little difference between Messias and Saelemaekers. Messias gives us a few more options from set plays, but Alexis is ready to come on.”

Inter took a 2-0 lead in the space of 11 minutes in the first leg, with goals from Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, so Milan are expected to come out far more attacking this time.

“We want to start thee game well, it’s true that it is long and we want to hang in there as well as achieve an advantage in any possible situation.”

The coach was asked how he slept last night, knowing it would all be decided this evening?

“I slept well enough. I am aware that tonight I will be either the happiest coach in the world or the most disappointed in the world.”
