Stefano Pioli explains why he revamped the Milan attack for this trip to Genoa, including the first Luka Jovic start, in a ‘competitive and complicated league.’

It kicks off at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, also known as Marassi, at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

Only 50 hours ago, Milan were on a plane flying back from Germany, where they played Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

“We are accustomed to this fixture list now, playing every three days, so it was important to prepare for a strong, intensive and aggressive team that has already beaten Lazio and Roma, along with a draw against Napoli,” Pioli told Sky Sport Italia.

Inter were held to a 2-2 draw at San Siro by Bologna this afternoon, despite taking a 2-0 lead in the opening 12 minutes.

That means a victory here would see Milan go two points clear at the top of the Serie A table heading into the break for international duty.

However, the Rossoneri have rotated the squad, including a completely new trident attack leaving Rafael Leao, Christian Pulisic and Olivier Giroud on the bench.

“Every match is important, as this is a very competitive and complicated league. I don’t think ultimately there will be a big gap between the top four teams.”

It is the first start in the Rossoneri jersey for ex-Fiorentina and Real Madrid centre-forward Jovic. Why did Pioli choose him to lead the attack?

“I think this is the best option to approach the game with the right aggression from the start. I also have squad full of talented players who need to play, while we have other options who can come off the bench and step up the tempo.”
