The Butei were beaten 3-1 by Genoa tonight, leaving them six points from safety with four games to go, two of which are Milan away and Juventus in Turin.

“Today my lads showed great spirit in a difficult place,” Pecchia insisted, speaking to Premium Sport after the final whistle.

“There was always the desire to win, but we didn’t succeed.

“There’s a big gap with four games to go and it’s difficult in the last games. We’ve played well but we haven’t picked up enough. We have the obligation and moral duty to continue.

“We live and die by the table, we’ve had a season of chasing. I keep thinking about the spirit, we’ve made mistakes in the last games and in a period like this the lads find it hard to react.

“I think in some moments we’ve lacked experience, we could have been more consistent. We’ve been too naive many times.

“In the most important part of the season we lost our most important attacking player [Moise Kean], and we’ve suffered for his absence.

“Giampaolo Pazzini? We bet on Kean and then we lost him for three months. I’m happy to have bet on him, the choices were made.

“The table is problematic, I want to trust the lads. It’s difficult but I can’t put a percentage on it. We have to win the next game.”

Pecchia was asked if he expects to be sacked.

“I can’t look at the future, I’m thinking about tomorrow and then the next game. These have been two important and intense years, now I keep thinking about the present.”

Daniel Bessa left for Genoa on loan in January, and celebrated scoring against his parent club today. Did that hurt?

“Absolutely not,” Pecchia said.

“He scored and he’s a Genoa player now. He wanted to go to Genoa, it was his choice.”
