Monday marks the first birthday of former Fiorentina, Cagliari and Italy defender Davide Astori since his tragic death last year.

Astori, who would have turned 32, died in his sleep while in Fiorentina’ team hotel the night before their Serie A match against Udinese on March 4.

He was only 31 years old at the time of his passing and multiple tests are still struggling to explain what happened.

Astori started his career in the Milan youth academy in 2001, remaining at the club – with loan spells at Cremonese and Pizzighettone – until July 2008.

The stopper spent six years at Cagliari, leaving in 2014 for Roma on loan, before starting his Fiorentina experience in the summer of 2015.

He made 99 appearances for the Viola, scoring one goal, and only became captain at the beginning of last season.

Astori also represented Italy on 14 occasions, helping them finish third at the 2013 Confederations Cup.
