Stephan El Shaarawy has officially left Roma to join Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua for €18m.

Shenhua confirmed on Monday morning that El Shaarawy would sign a three-year contract, reported to be worth €15m a season after tax.

Roma, in turn, announced the Chinese club had splashed out €16m up front on the winger, although €2m more should follow in bonuses.

Although initially rejecting the move, the former Milan attacker was about to enter the final year of his contract at the Olimpico and talks had stalled.

The 26-year-old spent three-and-a-half seasons with the Giallorossi, scoring 40 goals and providing 26 assists in 139 appearances.

He also has three goals in 23 caps for Italy but looks to have sacrificed his international career, in the same vein as Sebastian Giovinco and Graziano Pelle.

El Shaarawy joins a Shenhua side coached by ex-Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores and with Inter old boy Fredy Guarin on their books.
