Newcastle United are hoping to bring in Max Allegri as coach, with Edinson Cavani and Dries Mertens to bolster their attack, claim ESPN and Eurosport.

The Magpies are in the middle of a takeover by Saudi Arabian businessmen, who would show ambition by hiring a top name coach.

Mauricio Pochettino is the prime target, but Allegri is not far behind, as the former Juventus and Milan boss is currently out of work.

The Allegri link has been going for several days in England, but is now spreading to a more international audience.

The next target is a strong striker with international experience, so ESPN and Eurosport both point towards PSG hitman Cavani and historic Napoli star Mertens.

It would be relatively easy to sign Mertens, whose contract with Napoli expires in June, although Newcastle face a great deal of competition from Inter, Juventus, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Monaco.
