Roma starlet Nicolò Zaniolo has returned to group training and will be available against Cagliari on Sunday, while José Mourinho continues to monitor Granit Xhaka and is considering a new bid for 2022-23.

The 29-year-old was close to moving to the Stadio Olimpico in the summer. He had agreed personal terms with the Giallorossi, but the two clubs failed to shake hands on the player’s price tag, so Xhaka eventually remained in London, signing a contract extension with the Gunners.

Both Sky Sport and La Gazzetta dello Sport report that the Swiss international is still on Mourinho’s sights, although the Giallorossi may resume talks with Arsenal at the end of the season.

They have already signed Ainsley Maitland-Niles from the Gunners and Sergio Oliveira from Porto and Xhaka is an option for 2022-23.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Jordan Veretout will leave the club in the summer if Roma receive a suitable offer and Xhaka could replace the France international.

Meantime, Nicolò Zaniolo has returned to group training and will be eligible to play against Cagliari on Sunday.

New signing Sergio Oliveira is expected to make his debut against the Sardinians after undergoing medical with the Giallorossi today.

The Portuguese midfielder landed in Rome this morning.

4 thought on “Roma news: Zaniolo returns, Mourinho resumes interest in Xhaka”
  1. Roma can’t be so stupid as to allow Mourinho to bring in Xhaka. Come on now. Who is he better than? All of this for a manager who’s only trying to get you into the top 4 without any plans for the future? Come on.

  2. Roma squad is very young and Xhaka would make sense as a mentor

But Roma is 0.5b in the red. Only if he were to come for free, for max 2m salary, would it make sense

  3. Mourinho has a plan. He’s being aggressive as well as pragmatic in the market along with Pinto and supported by the Friedkins. When all is said and done you cannot fault him for pushing to win soon and sustainably at Roma.

  4. Zaniolo returned from injury is an article every 3 Weeks.

I like the kid and his potential is excellent but he is losing too much time to injury that is setting him back. Has accumulated 2 years worth of injury for player around 23 Year Old is a lot.

I wish him the best and sending nothing but good vibes but he needs a stretch of health to make up for lost time.
