Italian sports papers named Olivier Giroud as Milan‘s most disappointing player against RB Salzburg last night, but more of his teammates were not up to the task at the Red Bull Arena.

The France star has yet to score his first Champions League goal for Milan and his draught in Europe continued on Austrian soil last night when the Rossoneri were held to a 1-1 draw by RB Salzburg.

Giroud was rated 5/10 by each one of the three Italian sports papers: ‘He wasn’t arrested for excessive speed,’ wrote the pink paper.

‘It can happen to be static, but Giroud didn’t participate in the play and when Pavlovic gifted him a ball, he wasted the chance with his left foot.’

Gazzetta gave the same rating to Davide Calabria and Charles De Ketelaere, who were both subbed off in the second half, with the Italy defender looking pretty annoyed and disappointed.

Pierre Kalulu was also not entirely convincing. The hosts took the lead in the first half when Noah Okafor shimmied away from the Milan defender, beating Mike Maignan. Sandro Tonali failed to impress and didn’t get a passing grade in any of the three leading Italian sports papers (5.5).

Alexis Saelemaekers’ strikes helped Milan get away with a point in Austria and was the best player on the pitch for the Rossoneri.

  1. Milan have had to play 3 games in one week. A point wasn’t a terrible result. If you’d given me 4 points vs inter and salzburg on Saturday morning, I’d have taken it.

  2. I think many are underestimating CL matches, there are no easy games! Even Real Madrid got gunned down by Sheriff last season.

  3. 5 seems a bit harsh for Giroud. A bit high for the anonymous De Ketelaere though. Diaz was far more effective when he came on. Delighted for Saelemaekers too, he’s taken a lot of criticism.

Agree with the comments above, Salzburg were better than I expected and a point is not a terrible result. Particularly after Zagreb beat Chelsea.

  4. The team looked tired from the Derby still. They will need to get used to playing games this often though as we still have a while to go in CL. Even with a quiet game, CDK is still so much better than Diaz. Three points away to Salzburg is a decent result.

  5. CDK was anonymous for the most part but no way Diaz was more effective, let alone far more effective. De Ketelaere had a big hand in setting up our only goal, as he was the one who literally broke their press with a smart flick.
