Former Inter president Massimo Moratti was impressed with the Nerazzurri’s Supercoppa Italiana victory and suggested Milan ‘are out of shape’ following the World Cup break.

Simone Inzaghi’s side flew to a 3-0 win in their Supercoppa clash with the Rossoneri in Riyad, with goals from Federico Di Marco, Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez driving Inter to victory. It was an important result for the Nerazzurri, who have now seemingly recovered following their shaky start to the season.

Speaking to Daily Milan, Moratti first reflected on Inter’s Supercoppa Italiana win over Milan.

“It was a beautiful match, not one of those torn and won by chance. The second half was enjoyable to watch. Inter dominated the match and you could see a big gap between the two teams on the pitch. Both in terms of quality of play and enthusiasm and liveliness.

“Certainly, Milan took to the pitch with less strength. I don’t know if it was an athletic or psychological issue, they are out of shape at the moment, they look very tired. But I think the World Cup break also had an influence.”

He revealed which player he thought was the best on the pitch.

“I’d say Dzeko. At 37 years of age, he continues to play top-level football and last night’s goal is confirmation of that.

“He dominated the opponent’s defence and scored an extraordinarily beautiful goal, which became the symbol of this great Supercoppa victory.”

The former Inter president gave his thoughts on the title race this season.

“This is another competition and anything can happen. Milan could get back on track and aim straight for the Scudetto or lose ground. The same goes for Inter. They have phenomenal players and if they find consistency there could be an overtake in the standings.

“But Napoli are still in the lead and with a ten-point advantage we have to be very cautious before talking about the Scudetto.”

He commented on which two Milan players he’d like at Inter.

“Leao would certainly be very useful to Inter! As would Theo Hernandez. They really are two phenomena.”

Moratti reflected on his favourite Derby della Madonnina.

“You never forget your first derby. I had only been president of Inter for a few weeks and my team was not at the top. Milan started as favourites because they had so many champions in their team.

“Despite the unfavourable predictions we won 3-1, also thanks to the mistakes of the opponents who missed some incredible goals.”

He was asked if he regrets selling Andrea Pirlo and Clarence Seedorf to Milan.

“At least a thousand times!”

Finally, Moratti reviewed the work of Inter president Steven Zhang.

“He’s doing very well, year after year Inter have managed to win important trophies, like last night. I don’t think he lacks consistency, but time will tell.”
