Ex-Inter President Massimo Moratti has revealed that he tried to swoop for Roma talisman Francesco Totti back in 2007.

Moratti, who was at the helm of Inter between 1995 and 2013, held a long interview with the Corriere della Sera and admitted that he attempted to secure the services of the No 10.

“I was in Rome with President [Franco] Sensi, in 2007,” Moratti has recalled today.

“We were closing the deal for [Christian] Chivu and I threw it out there – if by chance you want to sell Totti, you just have to say the price.

“But he didn't think of it a second before answering: ‘No, Totti is staying here, I am never going to sell him’.

“He was right, even though Totti would have won the treble with us,” said Moratti, in reference to the 2010 success of the Scudetto, the Champions League and the Coppa Italia.

“He is an extraordinary player, extremely fierce when you confront him on the pitch, but very kind before and after.”
