The Indonesian purchased the majority share of the Nerazzurri in 2013 and worked alongside his predecessor for a year before Moratti’s resignation at honorary President in October.

Moratti, who led the club for 18 years as President, has explained to the Corriere della Sera why he decided to sell and what Thohir will bring to the table.

“I never thought I'd be a President for life,” said Moratti about his resignation.

“And when I understood that a change was necessary, so as to provide the club with new thrust, I chose to sell the majority share.

“Thohir is young, he has the will to do things and to do them well.

“His family have great economic resources – he wants to command, and this is right of him.

“Along with my son and with [director Rinaldo] Ghelfi we resigned from our positions because the situation that was emerging was not very likeable.

“The silence of the directors after [Coach Walter] Mazzarri's words about me was not particularly nice.

“But I am friends with Thohir and this episode did not crack our relationship, which is still excellent.

“I think he understands now that Inter is a different club from all others. Unique. And this holds for everyone – the directors, the Coaches, the players.

“Those who follow or practice sports at the highest levels can't aim for the 10th place.

“Once a supporter in the street told me – there has to be more spending. He was right.

“The choice of [Roberto] Mancini, which came from Thohir and which I liked, follows this logic.

“I also liked to hear Mancini speak of the third place as an uncharacteristic objective.”
