After defeating Spezia 2-0 at the Stadio Alberto Picco on Friday evening, Monza mathematically confirmed their place in Serie A for next season with six games to spare in the 2022-23 season.

A fantastic achievement from the Serie A newcomers, who had never previously competed in the top flight before the start of this season.

As the club posted on its official social media channels, no other newly-promoted side has avoided relegation with as many as six games left to play since the 20-team format came into play in 2004-05.

Their survival is particularly impressive given that the club were playing in Serie C when Silvio Berlusconi took control less than five years ago.

However, survival comes at a cost. Around €45.7 million in fact, largely due to obligation to buy clauses in a number of contracts that were negotiated at the start of the season.

Over €6 million will also need to be paid in staff and player bonuses for their part in securing Serie A safety.
