“This is an important game, the players know that, so I hope they play well!” the director of sport told Sky Sport Italia.

“I was with them yesterday and this morning, they were fired up and knew how important it was for us to go forward. We’ll see what happens.”

Roma have repeatedly been linked with Hector Herrera, along with Inter, Napoli, Milan and Juventus.

“I keep reading he is linked with Italian clubs. He’s very talented, but so are many Porto players. Everyone talks about Roma, but I can assure you there is nothing at all in it.”

FC Porto reinforced over the January transfer window, but Roma did not many any new signings.

“We have faith in the players we have in our squad. If you bring in a player, you have to let another leave, but we are convinced this team is ready and we kept faith with them.

“I think to go forward in the Champions League and Serie A, we have a strong selection of players. Don’t forget we had a lot of injuries and the team is still right in there, which means there is something special in this group.”
