As expected, Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has been given FIFA’s Men’s Player of the Year award ahead of Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo.

The award had been won by CR7 in each of the two years since its inception, and he and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi have dominated individual awards in recent years.

No player outside of those two has won the FIFA Ballon d’Or, FIFA World Player of the Year or the new The Best FIFA Men's Player since Kaka in 2007 while playing for Milan.

The Ballon d’Or has since returned to being decided by France Football.

Neither Ronaldo or Messi attended tonight’s ceremony, and given the Juve man was in the final three for the Player of the Year award that was taken as an indication that his former teammate would win.

Tonight it has been confirmed that Modric has taken the prize, after winning the Champions League with Los Merengues and inspiring Croatia to the World Cup final.

Both Messi and Ronaldo were in the FIFPro Team of the Year, but were the only two not to collect their awards in person.
