Roma coach Jose Mourinho suggested that it’s not easy ‘to understand’ Renato Sanches’ injury troubles but Milan clearly took note last year.

The 26-year-old Portuguese midfielder was forced off the pitch in the 28th minute of the Giallorossi’s Europa League opener against FC Sheriff, suffering from a muscle issue. The situation immediately caused concern amongst the club and fans.

Mourinho discussed Sanches and his injury history to the media after the match, saying that “it’s difficult to understand” the player’s health and that “they didn’t figure it out at Bayern Munich nor PSG”.

As highlighted by Calciomercato.com, Milan were seriously interested in making a move for Sanches in the summer of 2022 but decided not to due to persistent doubts surrounding his physical fitness, pulling out from a deal with Lille.

Roma were aware of this too this summer, which is why Mourinho preferred players like Davide Frattesi or Marcel Sabitzer before eventually agreeing to Sanches, who has missed 52 games through injury over the last three years.

The conditional obligation to buy clause attached to the Portuguese midfielder’s loan move will only be triggered if he plays 60% of the available games, which is starting to look unlikely.

  1. In that 60% m, if it’s for appearance only he can make it. The impact he will have though will be significantly less if these cameos are 25-30 min long .. well done to Trigoria 😅 quick recovery to the player, I can laugh at the club but not at the expense of the players..
