It’s likely that Milan will have to sign at least one Italian player this summer in order to hit the targets set by Serie A and Champions League squad registration limits.

The Rossoneri are given 25 player slots to register their squad, but they must present at least four who are products of their youth system and four who are products of another Italian club’s youth sector. The Milanese club had no trouble with this last season, but a few departures will force their hand this summer.

As detailed by Calciomercato.com, Milan currently have seven players who fit the two criteria listed above, starting with Matteo Gabbia, Davide Calabria and Daniel Maldini. They’ll be joined by the returning Tommaso Pobega and Alessandro Plizzari, as well as the already present Sandro Tonali.

Alessandro Florenzi is likely to be permanently signed from Roma and he makes seven, meaning one player is missing. The two returning loanees cover the departures of Antonio Mirante and Alessio Romagnoli, but there is no-one to fill the slot left behind by Franck Kessie, who’s heading to Barcelona.

Milan will now have to look to the market to find a solution, and they’ve been linked with a number of possible options over the last few weeks, like Domenico Berardi, Andrea Belotti and Nicolo Zaniolo.

7 thought on “Milan suffering from a lack of registered Italians”
  1. No need. Keep Caldara, we have Tomori-Kalulu as starters and Kjaer,Gabbia, Caldara as backups. Beautiful

  2. It would be great if Kjaer returns as strong as he was prior to his very serious injury, but that cannot be guaranteed. Caldara also has a history of injuries. I hope Romanogli will stay and then we won’t need to spend 40 million on Botman. Berardi would be a great signing.

  3. 24 hours a day ,7 days a week ,4 weeks a month ,MILAN MUST SIGN FEDERICO BERRADI ,any body with common sense can see Milan is to dependent on rafeal leao, it’s time to spread the work load .

  4. Milan will find a way around it but it’s a sorry state of affairs where we can’t muster a few home grown players.

The issue is this obsession with having 22 perfectly formed players for every position.

Maldini himself played in a squad where his back ups were Stefano Nava or Daniele Bonera. Gabbia is this sort of player. The point is he never needs to play except in the case of emergencies. It is a waste of time and money to sign a player just for emergencies, not to mention the fact that quality players are hardly going to want to be 4th choice.

Most successful squads (including in 2022) have a core of about 16 players – a sub-GK, 1 CB to cover both, ideally a FB who can cover both, a CM who can cover across, and then a few attacking options to unlock teams in tight matches. That is what Milan should be aiming for. The likes of Plizzari, Gabbia, Pobega, Maldini and Colombo are perfectly good squad players and, who knows, might even turn into something given half a chance.

  5. All this considering the Sporting Director was the ex Captain of the National Team.

    Disgraceful.

    Any wonder why we struggle.
