Milan are sniffing around Daniele De Rossi after he admitted that he could join an Italian club should he leave Roma.

The Italian midfielder is only contracted to the Giallorossi until June 2012 and talks over a renewal have yet to reach a compromise.

If no agreement is found then the capital-born star will be available on a Bosman free transfer at the end of the season.

“Things are at a standstill,” he stated this week when asked about talks. “There’s no hectic rush to get things sorted, but it is a little frustrating to be getting to January like this.

“If I was to leave Roma then my first choice would be to go and play football abroad. But if such a move couldn’t be agreed then I’d have to look to Italy. I couldn’t just quit football.”

Manchester City and Real Madrid are expected to show an interest in the 28-year-old should he leave the Stadio Olimpico.

However, reports gathering pace in Italy are claiming that Milan are keeping an eye on the developing situation.

According to a report in Il Tempo, De Rossi has asked Roma for a new salary of €7m a season after tax. Roma’s first offer began at €4.5m.

Milan would be able to offer De Rossi the salary he is looking for as they wouldn’t be spending any money on a transfer fee.
