Beppe Sala, the mayor of Milan, confirmed that he is still unaware of the current status of Milan and Inter’s new stadium project, noting that he’s been left to read updates ‘in the press’.

The two Milanese clubs had planned to work together to demolish the existing Stadio Giuseppe Meazza to make space for their new stadium in San Siro, but predictably the progress of the project has slowed due to the endless bureaucratic hurdles.

In recent weeks, rumours of a separation between the two clubs has emerged, with Milan owner Gerry Cardinale reportedly keen to pursue the new stadium project without Inter. Tension is growing between the two clubs and fans have been left concerned over the viability of two separate stadiums.

Speaking at a press conference at Palazzo Marino, Sala provided an update on Milan and Inter’s new stadium project, confirming that a meeting had been scheduled.

“I called the teams and asked them to come in the morning because I too am sometimes in the position of not having any information and having to read it in the press.

“While it’s clear to me that Milan at this point are looking with interest at La Maura, I have not understood where Inter are looking instead.

“So tomorrow morning they will come to me to clarify things together.”

The plan to demolish the existing Stadio Giuseppe Meazza to make space for a new stadium divided many in the footballing world, who were hesitant to lose one of the most iconic stadiums in the world.
