The question of a return to Serie A and to another big team has often been asked of the 49-year-old, who is currently out of work but enjoyed a successful four years with the Nerazzurri.

On from yesterday admitting that Italy would be a dream job to take, the former Manchester City and Galatasaray boss is also open to one day coming back to the domestic scene in the peninsula.

“I’m a professional,” Mancini has begun in conversation today with La Repubblica.

“Take Capello – he has trained Roma, Juve and Milan. It is normal. But this is a general discussion, Milan have a young Coach who they will put their confidence in.

“Would tensions with Adriano Galliani also be an issue? A century has since passed, we were young. We are now friends. But then again, the question has not arisen…”

Mancini also cast his eye on the potential title race in store for next season.

“Even with Conte on the bench, it would be hard for Juventus to win a fourth consecutive Scudetto. But the squad is very strong, Juventus remain the favourite.

“Roma have strengthened a lot, Iturbe has been the pick of the market, whilst I know Ucan well because he was at Fenerbahce, he has physique and technique, he is ready for Serie A.

“But then, again, Juventus are currently in pole position. Immediately after them are Roma and Napoli, together, and in the third row is Inter, Milan and Fiorentina.

“Inter are without big names this year? But if they start well, they may be the surprise as Roma were last year – to fight for the title is in the DNA of the Nerazzurri.”
