Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli hit out at reports he told Lazio fans he’d gladly join them tomorrow as a free agent. ‘I don’t understand how a newspaper can just invent a phrase.’

The centre-back has not agreed a new contract with the Rossoneri and is widely expected to leave as a free agent in the summer.

Lazio could well be his next destination, as he is a lifelong supporter of the Biancocelesti and eager to work with coach Maurizio Sarri.

Il Messaggero claimed that after the 2-1 Milan victory at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday evening, Romagnoli spoke to some Lazio fans and told them: ‘if it was up to me, I’d join tomorrow.’

However, today Romagnoli hit back with a message on Instagram Stories.

“I don’t understand how a newspaper can just invent, out of nowhere and with no respect, a phrase like that.”

The 27-year-old defender has always been a Lazio fan, despite the fact he came up through the Roma youth academy.

He made his mark in Serie A while on loan at Sampdoria in 2014-15 and it was his coach at that time, Sinisa Mihajlovic, who then insisted Milan sign him for €25m in the summer of 2015.

Romagnoli is only one of the players set to leave San Siro as a free agent, along with Franck Kessie, who is reportedly heading towards Barcelona.
