“It was a great victory,” smiled the Coach on Rai Sport. “I am happy for the qualification, but above all the performance, the attitude and character shown by the team.
“I don’t like to talk about individuals, but if I have to, then Simone Edera and Vanja Milinkovic-Savic really stood out today.”
“Over the last 10 days, we’ve won twice at the Olimpico and had two draws in Milan. The team is improving and I like it, so we must continue like this and make the step up in Serie A quality too.
“Torino hadn’t been in the Coppa Italia quarter-final for almost 10 years, but then we hadn’t won away to Lazio in 24 years, so taboos are made to be broken.”
Torino will go on to face either Juventus or Genoa in the Coppa Italia quarter-final on January 3.
“It doesn’t matter who we get in the next round, as right now we need to focus on Saturday’s match against SPAL in Serie A,” added Mihajlovic.
“I am never relaxed, because the only relaxed person was dead two days ago. With this attitude, defensive solidity and attacking football, we can do great things. We can’t be complacent, because history teaches us we can have wonderful results against big clubs, then draw with Crotone and Chievo.
“The objective is to challenge for a place in Europe. If we lose our humility, then we’ll get nowhere, that is what I want my players to understand.”
This is the first season in which the usual Christmas break is scrapped for Serie A and the Coppa Italia, as there are games on December 29-30, January 2-3 and January 5-6.
“It doesn’t change much in terms of the football, but it does when dealing with the wives. They won’t be happy, but it’s our job and after January 6 we’ll have at least seven free days.”
