Philippe Mexes reveals what he was thinking when he took a shot from 41 metres in Milan’s 0-0 draw at Roma.

The centre-back very nearly scored a stunner from 45 yards, but was denied by a Morgan De Sanctis fingertip save.

“I had two bad passes at the start, so I thought rather than risk it again I’d just shoot!” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“We were under pressure and that’s fair enough in a fixture like this. A point is good against Roma, but we need to improve and raise our game.

“Our objective was to go home with a positive result, which is what we did. It’s a shame we only got a point, but Roma are second and that’s fair enough. We want to begin 2015 the same way we ended 2014.”

Mexes had been expected to leave over the summer, but thanks to the injury crisis got back into the starting XI and is showing his best form with the Rossoneri.

“It was not easy to find form and confidence here. Perhaps I waited four years to really prove myself at Milan, but there are positive and negative moments in football. Things can change quickly, so we have to keep our feet on the ground.

“The Coach asks us to keep the defence high and it’s something we are trying to improve game by game. We were missing Rami, but Zapata and Armero played well.

“We need to believe in ourselves more so that we can put a side like Roma under even more pressure.”
