“They are fearsome numbers, but if the other teams keep winning it becomes difficult,” Mertens said after the match at San Paolo.

“We are working hard and doing well. It is the best moment of my career.

“I am playing more and we have a team that is bouncing. I am pleased.”

The 30-year-old called for his side to keep believing they can achieve ‘special things.’

“Today it was great at the San Paolo. Now we want to keep going and do special things, let’s hope that’s how it goes.

“The Scudetto? We need to always believe.”

Mertens also acknowledged Napoli face a tough test in this week’s crucial Champions League match with Manchester City.

“We know it will be difficult because they play good football, but we want to do well because we lost there.”
